Union County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 17,808, which is a decrease of 2.7% from 18,293 in 2000.[1] Its county seat is Jonesboro.[2]

According to the 2010 census, the county has a total area of 422.15 square miles (1,093.4 km2), of which 413.46 square miles (1,070.9 km2) (or 97.94%) is land and 8.69 square miles (22.5 km2) (or 2.06%) is water.[3]

Union County was formed out of Johnson County in 1818, the same year Illinois joined the Union.

As of the census[5] of 2000, there were 18,293 people, 7,290 households, and 4,971 families residing in the county. The population density was 44 people per square mile (17/km²). There were 7,894 housing units at an average density of 19 per square mile (7/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.28% White, 0.82% Black or African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.19% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 2.63% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 23.7% were of German, 22.7% American, 11.8% English and 10.3% Irish ancestry according to Census 2000.

There were 7,290 households out of which 30.30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.60% were married couples living together, 9.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.80% were non-families. 28.40% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.90% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the county the population was spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 26.70% from 25 to 44, 25.10% from 45 to 64, and 17.50% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $30,994, and the median income for a family was $37,710. Males had a median income of $30,016 versus $22,305 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,450. About 10.80% of families and 16.50% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.80% of those under age 18 and 12.10% of those age 65 or over.

In recent years, average temperatures in the county seat of Jonesboro have ranged from a low of 22 °F (−6 °C) in January to a high of 90 °F (32 °C) in July, although a record low of −20 °F (−29 °C) was recorded in January 1918 and a record high of 112 °F (44 °C) was recorded in July 1901. Average monthly precipitation ranged from 3.13 inches (80 mm) in September to 5.22 inches (133 mm) in May.[6]
